Pros

  • Supports changing the default opening app for every major photo type: jpg, bmp, png, tif, gif, and ico to name a few examples.
  • Easy-to-use button allows applying the changes to all users of your PC. This is necessary if you have multiple user accounts on one machine. You can also choose to restrict it to just your account if you don’t want to mess with others’ setups.
  • Can select or deselect image file types, allowing you to choose which types of photos open in Windows Photo Viewer and which open in the Photos app. If you want to split them up for some reason, then you’ll appreciate this feature.

Cons

  • There’s a built-in ad for another software product offered by the developer that can’t be turned off. Luckily, it’s unobtrusive and use of this app is pretty quick. The ad is also for related software, which is nice.
  • The splash screen when the software launches is a little off-putting with the creepy clown, but it’s really not an issue at all.

Restore Windows Photo Viewer is a simple and easy-to-use app that restores the classic Photo Viewer from Windows 7 and previous versions to Windows 10, which has switched over to a Windows Store Photos app by default. A lot of people don’t like the new look and feel of the Photos app, especially on non-touchscreen devices, and they’d prefer to revert to more of a keyboard and mouse friendly alternative. While the classic Windows Photo Viewer is actually still available within Windows 10, it’s hidden and has to be manually enabled by the user.

Don’t know how to manually change over to the classic app? Well then this app by Authorsoft is perfect for you. It’ll do all the behind-the-scenes heavy lifting, and it barely even makes a footprint on your hard drive, clocking in at just over 1 MB.
